 My Books At Powell's Famous Book Store In Portland by BJ Neblett

It is true that Covid has taken its toll on the many book and sci-fi/fantasy conventions. I really miss meeting with readers one on one, usually making as many conventions each year as possible. A couple of my favorite stops happen in Portland, Oregon each year. I am never disappointed at the warm and friendly reception my books and I receive. And while visiting the City of Roses, one of my favorite stops is always Powell's Book Store.

While surfing the net recently, I was pleasantly surprised to see a listing for my latest book, Planet Alt-Sete-Nine Book Two: Princess Haylee at none other than Powell's famous shop. For those of you in the Portland area, you can stop in and ask for a copy of Princess Haylee. The rest of us can score copies via Powell's very neat website.               Azami and Cailey fell to their knees, bowing their heads in stunned reverence. “My Lady, Princess of Galloway; Queen of the Six Realms,” the wizardess declared.

           Haylee’s arms reached out and her eyes slowly opened. They now glowed with a brilliant jade fire. As she gazed out across the still forest, the beam of sunlight continued to widen. All around, the hard earth softened turning a dark mocha color. The frozen grey mist that hugged the ground dissipated and tender blades of grass began to work their way through the moist soil. Soon the rocky ledge gave way to a lush lawn.

           The heavenly ray spread, leaving in its wake a carpet of multicolored flowers and rich blue green grass. As the light touched long dormant branches, the sleeping trees stretched out their arms in an offering of colorful leaves and succulent fruits. Everywhere, bushes and plants leisurely awakened.

         The air quickly warmed, tempered by a gentle southerly breeze. It carried with it the tender scent of sweet Bowden Berries and the sharp bite of a distant thunderstorm. Overhead, the mournful cry of a Sappy Bird calling to its mate broke through the ubiquitous silence.

            The two women rose and gazed about. “By the blessed ghost of old King Rhamen!” gasped Azami.

            The long latent Royal Forest of Galloway had finally returned to life.

Just as the princess accepted her birthright, we must accept this trial that has been placed upon us. But acceptance doesn't mean complacency. Haylee accepted and then acted, taking her responsibilities in hand, awakening the Royal Forest from its long slumber, allowing her people to once again walk in the sunshine unafraid. This veil of idleness that has gripped the world due to Covid will be lifted, allowing us to once again walk in the sunshine unafraid.

Sneak Peek And A First Look Planet Alt-Sete-Nine Book Two: Princess Haylee by BJ Neblett

Looks like we are still set for a late February release date for book two of my dimension bending take on video gaming, AI, and alternate universes. Princess Haylee is the second installment of the Planet Alt-Sete-Nine series. Having conquered the video game she was beta testing for her boyfriend, Haylee has awakened and discovered she is heir to the throne of an unknown planet. Now she must make her way to Galloway City to accept her birthright, through dangers and intrigue and those who would keep her from the throne.

Chapter Two

 

            It had rained overnight, a cool, steady refreshing rain. Ominous clouds of violet and grey had already started to gather, even as Amber followed her twin brothers, slipping silently into the western horizon. Electric fingers of purple and gold tore through the night skies and deafening tolls of thunder forewarned of the impending downpour. Throughout the night, creatures stirred from their lairs to drink, as the thirsty earth greedily gathered-in the rare and welcomed offering. Not until leading sun Sol was approaching its zenith did the cloud cover begin to retreat and the nourishing green drops of rain start to abate.

            “Was there ever a day more beautiful?” Cailey stood just outside the entrance to the cave, breathing in the sharp air. The wet forest glistened in the bright orange sunlight.

            “Not for nearly thirty years,” Azami answered, moving beside her friend. “It’s hard to believe, Cailey, but the Magical Land of Galloway hasn’t tasted rain for almost three decades.”

            “It’s incredible that anything survived.”

            “Galloway has been resting, not dead; lost in a suspended state. Nothing has grown here, nothing has died, and nothing has moved. Not a plant or tree or creature or bird. Nothing has changed in all of that time.”

            Cailey laid a hand to Azami’s shoulder. “From what I’ve seen and what I’ve experienced, in a way it’s the same for the rest of the planet. The people of Alt-Sete-Nine have given up. Since the end of the wars, they have reverted to the old ways. Most all live-in simple villages, tending to their own business, never venturing far from the private little worlds they have created for themselves. Even the people of Vista City are contented to remain safely concealed in their secret valley paradise. And nowhere does anyone speak of the princess, or the Royal Family, or even of Galloway.”

            “You must understand that it is how Inhodu willed it. He knew of the hardships that lay ahead. He did not wish Galloway to suffer anymore. Nor did he want the people’s minds to be burdened with the memories of how it was before the Hundred Years War. Healing takes time, as does rebuilding. Don’t be too quick to judge them. It hasn’t been easy for your people.” Their eyes met as Cailey turned to the old woman. “Yes,” Azami said, “your people. Remember, you are mortal now. You are one of us. And this world is your home.”

            “Yes,” Cailey sighed, “but for how long?”

            “Tomorrow is promised to no one, my dear.” She brushed back an errant lock of Cailey’s long golden hair. Azami’s heart ached for Cailey. In many ways, the young woman was little more than a child, newly making her way through life. It was a life with an uncertain future. She wished she could find a way to offer up more than mere words of consolation. “Like everything, Cailey, our time is set from the moment we are born. You are still under the Great Wizard’s spell, a spell that dictates you must find true love or else you will perish.” A knowing smile crept across her face as she placed a finger to Cailey’s lips. “But spells were meant to be broken.” She stretched an arm out to the flourishing forest. “You of all people should be aware of that reality. Through your sacrifices and unselfish act of bringing the princess to life, just look at what you have helped to accomplish.”

            The two women gazed out upon the Royal Forest of Galloway with renewed wonder. Longer than anyone could remember, the woods stood motionless, locked in time, frozen by the wizard Inhodu’s protective spell. With a simple declaration, and by the power of the medallion, the princess had broken that spell. Now the land thrived as never before with towering trees and lush vegetation. Verdant carpets of shimmering blue-green grass stretched beyond the horizon. Colorful birds filled the skies, while creatures of all types and sizes foraged in the warm rays of the suns.

            “It is beautiful, isn’t it?” Cailey said.

            “It lives, my dear. And so shall you. Remember, you can change your future, but destiny is a stubborn mistress. She will win out. And I believe an even greater destiny awaits you, just as it awaits the princess.”

            The words brought needed comfort to the young woman. She placed an arm affectionately around Azami’s waist, pulling her close. “Thank you. You truly are wonderfully wise.”

            “Maybe, but that is only if you measure wisdom in years, my dear.”

            “So where is our princess on this magnificent day?”

            “She was quite exhausted last night. We’ll let her rest a while longer.”

Looks like we made it, sort of speak, to the end of another year. And who isn't glad to see this one end? As usual, here is a bit of a wrap-up of what I've been up to while forced to hunker down for the duration. 

If nothing else, this forced lockdown has been good for the creative process. Much to my publisher's delight, I finished Planet-Alt-Sete-Nine Book Two: Princess Haylee. It should be hitting bookstores and online sellers in February. I'll keep you posted. Also, I have a good head start on book three, tentatively titled War of the Wizards. Finger's crossed for a late 2021 release. Also, later in the year, look for the paperback release of my New Millennialism contemporary fantasy collection of short stories, Wouldn't It Be Funny If.. to be released. And speaking of which, from now until January 1st, Wouldn't It Be Funny If... is available in all ebook formats for only .99 through Smashwords.

With Covid-19, it would seem that writing is about all I have to report for 2020. But that writing has produced a number of quotes which are already being talked about and gaining in popularity.  Books, Books, More Books And Quotes by BJ Neblett

Hello again. I thought I'd give you a bit of diversion from clicking the refresh button on the Black Friday sale of Nintendo Switch while you try and digest your turkey. Oh, I got my Switch with a Mario Kart 8 bundle on Wednesday. It took from 4 PM until 8:30 PM but was worth the effort. Anyway, for those of you who are familiar with the yearly NaNoWriMo, I've been using it as an incentive to get a jump on Book 3 of Planet Alt-Sete-Nine. I finished Book 2 Princess Haylee and it is in the hands of my publisher. He promises a February, 2021 release. Also, my very talented writer buddy KJ McPike put the cap on her Astrilis series and has started a new series and we fell into this friendly competition, as we always seem to do. The goal of NaNoWriMo is to write 50,000 words in the 30 days of November. With two days to go, KJ and I are about neck and neck. Thing is, I'm just writing words, getting chapters fleshed out. KJ, perfectionist that she is, I'm sure is pumping out wonderful first drafts. Come December, when we start exchanging chapters as we do to critique (read: tear apart) each other's work, I'll be getting neat and orderly structure, while she'll be getting my hot mess. Serves her right... KJ's book, Paths Uncertain is the final chapter in the Souls Untethered Saga, and is available everywhere.

As release date draws closer, I'll post a short preview of Book two Planet Alt-Sete-Nine: Princess Haylee. And hopefully, down the line I'll post some quick excerpts of Book Three Planet Alt-Sete-Nine: War Of The Wizards here for your enjoyment.

Hello again. I hope all are staying well in mind, body and soul during these crazy times. Myself, I'd been hunkered down right here behind my keyboard, which actually is the reason for today's blog.

First off, I have once again been honored by having two of my popular quotes selected for publication. The good folks at Wingless Dreamer are compiling a book of inspirational quotes, which will include two of my favorites. It should be out around October or November, and be available in paperback. Keep checking here for updates on release and where you can score a copy.

I've also been hard at work on Princess Haylee, book two in my Planet Alt-Sete-Nine series. If having to stay at home most of the time has one advantage it's the fact that I've gotten quite a bit accomplished. A couple of more chapters, some intense editing, and then it's off to my publisher. It is looking like a January or February release date, and of course you'll be able to pick up ebook or paperback copies from Amazon or your favorite book seller. Again, check back for up dates.

Finally, I know it has been a rough year for everyone. It really sucked that so many of the comic cons and sci-fi/fantasy conventions had to be canceled. No one is more disappointed than yours truly. As things change and we all are able to get back out to the real world again, you can be sure I'll be back on the road again, signing books and meeting with my fans. If you are in the greater northwest, check your area for an upcoming comic con or book convention in 2021 and I'll see you there. Riddle Answered And A Peek Inside Princess Haylee: Planet Alt-Sete-Nine Book Two by BJ Neblett

Ok, I planned to let you ponder a bit longer, but my email box is flooded and I'm afraid the good folks at gmail might shut me down. Thank you for all the replies and answers. A couple of you actually got it right...I assume it is because you too have found true love!
So here is the answer to the riddle, taken directly from my writing notes for my next book, Princess Haylee: Planet Alt-Sete-Nine Book Two. I am presently looking at a late fall 2020 publishing date.

Crossing the Royal Forest, Cailey, Haylee and Azami come to a river. The bridge is guarded by an ogre. He says they must answer a riddle to gain the right to pass.

But Cailey challenges him and they fight with swords. After a fierce fight, she has bested him and holds him on his back at sword point.

Suddenly Haylee steps forward. “By the blessed bones of old King Rhamen I command you to stop! Put your weapon away!”

“And who are you to dare call upon the name of good King Rhamen?” the ogre calls out.

“I am his daughter, Princess Haylee.”

“If you truly are the lost Princess then answer me this: When we sleep we have dreams but know not of reality. When we awaken we have reality but know not of dreams. When is it then that we have both?”

“Enough of this foolishness, my Lady; permit me to run him through that we may continue our journey and this passage be open to all.”

“No.” Haylee thinks for a moment. Images of her and Jake together fill the Princess’ mind as tears fill her eyes. She remembers… and she understands. “I have been asleep,” she answers. “And I have been awake. But only when we are in love can we know both the dreams and the reality.”

Just then a beam of sunlight shines down from Amber. It touches the ogre, surrounding him with a golden aura. It grows brighter, causing the others to turn away. A moment later it is gone and the ogre had been transformed into a young warrior.

Princess Haylee Update And A Riddle by BJ Neblett

Hope all are well and coping with the craziness all around. Hold up here I've finished up editing author KJ McPike's latest YA novel, Paths Uncertain which should be out later this year. Now it's back to writing for me, and work on Princess Haylee, the second of my Planet Alt-Sete-Nine series. Princess Haylee should hit the stores in paperback and ebook sometime later this year as well. Stop by some of the numerous sci-fi/fantasy comic cons and book shows and you might just score autographed copies of both books! As you probably already know, many of the major book, sci-fi/fantasy, comic and other conventions for the year have been canceled. These unfortunately include Emerald City, Norwest Con and Medford City. The fate of other popular conventions remains undecided as of this posting. Keep watch of your favorite conventions on their home page web sites, and I will continue to post updates and future appearances right here as they become available. Hopefully things will be back to normal soon, and we'll all be able to get back to celebrating the fantastic in all of us.             Sometime back, before the world went crazy – my world that is, although the rest of the world is… well, that’s a topic for another dozen blogs – I started a blog about a term I coined to help define what I see as a trend in writing away from traditional, Modernism and Post-Modernism: New Millennialism. (See this blog, February 16, 2019) Simply put New Millennialism is, “Thrusting cutting edge technology, concepts and ideas into the very core of classic human situations." You may quote me on that! Ok, so what exactly does that carefully crafted jumble of words mean? Good question. To understand, let’s look at previous literature groupings. Class is now in session.

Modernism

            Modernism is a philosophical movement that, along with cultural trends and changes, arose from wide-scale and far-reaching transformations in Western society during the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries. Alright, enough Wikipedia babble. People in the late 1800’s started to tinker, asking, “Can this be done easier, better.” This led to inventions. The discovery of large deposits of oil led to more advanced inventions. These inventions led to factories. Factories helped propel the large shift in the populace from rural to urban areas to work in these factories. And all of this led to what we now call the industrial revolution: inventions begat more employment which begat more products and higher salaries, and the whole thing begat more leisure time for us to stop and breathe and think. Ironically, something Victorian peoples had plenty of time to do, but seem not very adept at doing.

Now we all know what thinking leads to… people, Americans and Europeans in particular, began a conscious desire and effort to overturn tradition. In short, the birth of Idealism in literature: Modernism. The horrors of World War One contributed to a world-wide reassessment of the ideas, ideals and morals of society: ie, people were fed up and wanted something new. Idealism, remained popular, accompanied by more cynical thoughts and beliefs, soon manifesting themselves in works of art, music, architecture, philosophy and more. We will concentrate on literature.

            Some outstanding proponents of what would become known as the Modernism Movement in literature include: Virginia Woolf; James Joyce; Gertrude Stein, and poet T. S. Eliot. They presented works in a less illusionary and more realistic vein. What is, what could be and what should be became catch phrases for writers desirous of shedding the oppressive restraints of the Victorian Era. A ‘Let’s be happy and gay,’ mindset carried the world populace through the roaring ‘20’s. Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby examined what we think we are and desire to be, passing the torch to authors like John Steinbeck and William Faulkner and William Carlos Williams who examined who we really are and strive to be, through the depression racked 1930’s and the war torn 1940’s.

While traditional wisdom states that Modernism began fading post 1940, many modernists continued to publish beyond, and indeed, into the 1950’s. These include Faulkner, Wallace Stevens, Hermann Broch, T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound and Samuel Beckett. Most have been described as ‘later modernist’.

            Rather than bore you with further hotly debated theories on who is and who isn’t, and what is and what isn’t, let’s just look at some outstanding examples of Modernist Literature.

            Any of the writers and their works mentioned here will give you a more insightful look into Modernism in literature than my simple prose can offer. Enjoy. Next time we’ll tackle Post Modernism on our way to figuring out what the heck is New Millennialism. Hint: it’s more prevalent in today’s literary sci-fi/fantasy fiction than you might think!
